Encouragement on the Journey

“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

— Jeremiah 29:11

Your journey is not the same as mine, and my journey is not yours.

We were each given a path—winding, stretching, rising, and sometimes breaking beneath our feet. No two roads look the same, and yet, all are sacred in their own way.

Mark’s path has included the battle of sobriety—a road marked by struggle, discipline, courage, and grace. My path has carried its own burdens and blessings. And yours, too, has its unique terrain.

We may not fully understand one another’s roads, but sometimes, our journeys cross. And when they do, we are given a gift: the chance not to compare, not to compete, but to encourage.

Because encouragement is the language of fellow travelers. It says:

“I may not know the weight of your struggle, but I honor the strength it takes to keep walking.”

“I may not face the same temptations, but I celebrate every victory you fight for.”

“I may not see your final destination, but I believe with you that freedom, peace, and beauty are ahead.”

Mark’s sobriety reminds me daily that journeys are not meant to be easy, but they are worth it. And they are not meant to be walked alone.

Even the briefest meeting along the path—an encouraging word, a shared smile, a quiet presence—can bring light into the dark places.

So, if our paths cross, may we choose encouragement.

May we be gentle with one another’s stories.

May we pause long enough to honor the battles fought and the victories won, both seen and unseen.

And when our paths separate again, may we both walk a little lighter, a little stronger, and a little more certain that the journey—though different for each of us—is worth every step.
